Quirky is a really cool website for inventors. Wondering why we are talking about it here?
In order to see how it ties to fueling the body well, let’s start with talking about a fueling night’s sleep so it will be easier to explain how Quirky fits in.
The experiment: Sleep in the Dark; Wake in the Light
On a quest to create the conditions for an optimal night’s sleep, Antonios and I decided to do an experiment with our blinds. We were aiming to determine which supports better sleep– dark while you are sleeping, or natural light when you wake. And what we decided was both are important. How could we have both? We priced some automated blinds, but were disappointed to find out they cost in the ballpark of $600 per blind. That’s how a fueling night’s sleep and Quirky come together…
A fueling night’s sleep and Quirky (a website for inventors)
Antonios sketched up an idea for a more affordable solution for having blinds that are closed at night and open in the morning. Wake with Sun window-blind Motor. Check out his sketch and his concept here.
If you think it’s an awesome idea, vote for it and hopefully, the folks at Quirky will bring the idea into a reality.
Looking for more information about the idea for these motorized blinds?
The human body is designed to rise with the sun, not a startling noise from a typical alarm clock. The human body is also designed to sleep in total darkness. How can a person both sleep in total darkness and wake with the sunrise?
Current automated blinds are outrageously expensive– $600 per window.
Plus, most people already have window blinds or curtains that they like and have no need to replace.
All manual curtains and blinds operate by pulling a string to open or raise. To automate the opening of the blinds all that is required is a motor to pull the string.
How does it work?
Device attaches to wall below/near window frame.
Device contains motor and pulley with it’s own cable.
Device cable attaches to curtain/blind pull cord.
When activated, motor turns pulley which pulls device cable, which pulls cord to open curtains/blinds.
Connects to smart phone for programmability:
Set time to open to a specific time or to sunrise time (retrieved from phone internet source)
Include alarm clock in phone app for those concerned that light will not wake them. (emergency backup alarm)
Install, set settings via smart phone, then device works on autopilot.
What is Quirky?
Quirky is a website that you can submit your cool product ideas. If the evaluation committee thinks the idea has potential, they vet the idea some more and eventually decide if they will do the work to bring your idea to life. Not only do you get to see your idea become a reality, you also get royalties.
How does the evaluation committee see your idea? One way is to get 200 votes for your idea. So, if you like the idea, please check out Antonios’s Wake with the Sun window-blind motor idea and vote for it.
